[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 42: I Participated in Two Online Art Workshops!

 Japanese follows English/

Today, I participated in the free online event organised by the National Gallery in London, Talk and Draw – The Full-Length Mirror.

今日は、ロンドンのthe National Galleryが主催する無料オンラインイベント「Talk and Draw – The Full-Length Mirror」に参加しました。

The session primarily featured the 1869 painting The Full-Length Mirror by Eva Gonzalès. There was a short lecture about her work and the way colour is used in the piece. This was followed by an activity session in which participants worked on quick study drawings as well as sketches of our own mirror reflections, referencing artworks from the gallery’s collection such as Gonzalès’ piece and Rokeby Venus by Diego Velázquez.

These are my studies.

It was a valuable learning experience for me to focus on shading and light rather than becoming fixated on small details or linework.

Additionally, I participated in the online art event Hurvin Anderson: Painting Place, organised by the London Drawing Group.

I had little prior knowledge of the artist, but studying his work through both lectures and hands-on exercises made me fall in love with his vibrant yet soothing artistic style. He is known for using painting as a form of enquiry into how he relates to his environment, often working from photographs as a starting point to explore how elements of different locations can be assembled to create a dialogue.

Apparently, his work is being exhibited at Tate in London from 26 March to 23 August 2026.

At the end of the session, I created the piece below using motifs from my quick studies of his work, along with inspiration drawn from his style.

It was a full day of artistic learning!

   Japanese follows English/

Hello, this is Nisreen — welcome to the tenth episode of Season Three of my podcast!

Have you watched the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, yet? I watched it as soon as it was released, and left the cinema feeling deeply emotional. It took me a while afterwards to gather my thoughts.

In today’s episode, I’d like to highlight three aspects that made Michael a compelling film not only for MJ fans, but for anyone who cares about art. There will be spoilers, so please come back later if you’d prefer not to spoil the experience for yourself! I will show the process of drawing the thumbnail in the background of the YouTube video.

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 35- How to Tell Japanese, Chinese, and Korean Belly Dancers Apart Online

How to Tell Japanese, Chinese, and Korean Belly Dancers Apart Online

These are my personal observations, and of course there are always exceptions. The point of this post is simply to have a giggle over a cup of tea. Not to mention, there are many cultural commonalities between these countries too. :)

Japan

  1. There is always at least one studio photo taken by Mr. Nam.

    This is mine lol

  2. In photos with dance friends, a “cute” pose is common—one hand resting on the cheek.

    Me posing with Ozma

  3. Many posts show restaurant performances, with audience faces blurred (restaurant shows are rarely seen in China or Korea).

  4. Lesson outfits tend to split between skirts and leggings, but among students, those showing a lot of leg are fewer than in China.

  5. A wide age range (mainly people in their 20s to 50s).

  6. Photos of meals with a partner appear, but often only hands are shown and the partner’s face is hidden—a so-called “soft launch”. If the partner is foreign, their face is sometimes shown.

  7. The dancers' children occasionally appear in posts.

China

  1. Very fair skin with vivid, matte lipstick—Snow White–style make-up.

  2. Many dancers are extremely slim.

  3. All students wear matching, dressy lesson outfits and perform group dances in the studio (everyone showing beautifully bare legs).

  4. Short videos filmed in dramatic locations such as the sea or palaces.

  5. Videos with large Chinese characters used prominently as titles.

  6. Everyday life, such as casual meals, is rarely shown; everything posted is polished and highly professional.

  7. When the hair is curled, it is tightly and finely curled rather than loose waves.

South Korea

  1. Soft, bouncy skin like a peeled boiled egg; it’s uncommon to see vivid, matte lipstick worn daily.

  2. Many dancers are young (including teenagers and those in their early twenties).

  3. Lesson outfits are often stylish but lean more towards sporty than dressy.

  4. Selfies in everyday clothes are common; hats appear frequently.

  5. Some photos include partners.

  6. Photos showing only competition trophies.

  7. Veil work is not seen very often.

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 33–Why You Should Watch Gentleman Jack (BBC & HBO) /絵日記33 BBC&HBOドラマ『Gentleman Jack』を観るべき理由

 Japanese follows English/

Although the number of television dramas centred on romantic relationships between women has gradually increased over the past twenty years, such works remain relatively rare on a global scale. First broadcast between 2019 and 2022, Gentleman Jack stands out even among these few examples, boasting an outstanding script by the acclaimed writer Sally Wainwright and superb performances from a highly accomplished cast. Set in 1830s Yorkshire, the series is based on the real-life figure Anne Lister, and depicts, with both poignancy and humour, the challenges that accompanied a woman’s determination to live her life openly with another woman. Below are three key reasons why this drama is so remarkable. (Spoilers are avoided.)

This is my fan art of Miss Lister (Suranne Jones) and Miss Walker (Sophie Rundle)!

1. A balance between historical accuracy and entertainment

Living in a manner that closely resembles what we would now describe as openly lesbian, Anne Lister is arguably the most relatable character for modern viewers. No matter how harshly she is judged by those around her, she refuses to abandon her resolve to live authentically. Articulate and quick-witted, Anne is sometimes described as manipulative. While viewers may find themselves instinctively rooting for her, the series does not shy away from portraying aspects of her character that sit uncomfortably with contemporary values.

She takes immense pride in her aristocratic status and holds politically conservative views. Her rigid class consciousness is evident in small but telling moments: she cannot accept a family member marrying into a trade, and even when she recognises her own mistakes, she is unable to apologise to her servants. While the series carefully portrays the oppression of      homosexuality in nineteenth-century society, it also acknowledges Anne’s privilege. Her ability to live with dignity and confidence was, in part, enabled by her wealth and aristocratic position. Personally, I find it disappointing when historical dramas simply replace past values with modern ones—a problem I felt keenly in Anne with an E. For that reason, I was particularly drawn to Gentleman Jack for its commitment to historical realism.

2. The emotional complexity of the characters

As noted above, despite its epic scope, the drama consistently maintains a sense of realism. While the romantic elements can be joyful and exhilarating, the characters themselves are deeply complex and far from flawless. Each possesses admirable qualities alongside traits that are difficult to condone. In particular, Anne’s wavering resolve and, at times, ethically questionable decisions in Season 2 proved divisive among viewers. Yet I would argue that it is precisely this portrayal of her vulnerability that gives the series its emotional depth. Can anyone be unmoved when the whole world is against them? At one point Anne even admits, “Don’t hurt me. I’m not as strong as you think.” This scene is impossible to watch without tears.

3. Naturalistic dialogue

The dialogue throughout the series feels strikingly natural; at no point does it sound as though characters are      delivering lines. This is undoubtedly a testament not only to the quality of the writing, but also to the actors’ exceptional performances. The arguments between Anne and her long-time friend Mariana Lawton are particularly outstanding. These scenes feel less like scripted drama and more like genuine conversations, charged with intensity and emotional complexity. Alongside these heavier moments, the series also offers plenty of witty, light-hearted exchanges that draw spontaneous laughter. Compared with Happy Valley, another of Sally Wainwright’s acclaimed works, Gentleman Jack feels notably brighter and more humorous overall. Anne’s expressive use of her eyes is also remarkable. Even in moments of silence, emotions such as guilt, loneliness, and love are conveyed with striking clarity.

Overall, Gentleman Jack is a richly layered and deeply engaging drama that explores love, family, women’s independence, aristocratic society, and history  from multiple perspectives.
It is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in these themes.

[Bilingual post] Podcast S3: Ep7 Why NANA Readers Should Watch Riot Women /ポッドキャスト S3: Ep7 NANA 読者が Riot Women を観るべき理由

     Japanese follows English/

Hello, this is Nisreen! Welcome to episode seven of season three. Today I’m talking about the new BBC series Riot Women. It came out last month, and I loved it so much. The story follows a group of women in their forties and fifties who start a punk-rock band to reclaim their voices — classic sharp, emotional Sally Wainwright writing.

As I watched, it reminded me of NANA, the iconic 2000s manga by Ai Yazawa, which I discussed in a previous episode. The settings couldn’t be more different, yet the parallels are surprising. So today, I’ll share five reasons why NANA fans should watch Riot Women — and why Riot Women viewers might enjoy NANA. There will be spoilers, so feel free to come back later if you need to.

Hello, this is Nisreen. Welcome to the 14th episode of Season Two of my podcast—it’s lovely to speak with you again!

The other day, I came across a Psychology Today article titled "8 Things That Toxic Mothers Do” by Peg Streep. The word “toxic” feels worn out on social media nowadays, but what it really means is behaviour that threatens others' well-being in some way—emotionally, or psychologically. As I read the eight alarming signs listed in this article, I started thinking about incredibly accurate depictions of such mother-child relationships in stories.

In this episode, I am going to introduce two excellent films and two manga that capture the essence of toxic motherhood, and explore some potential ways of healing. I hope you enjoy it!

Introduction:
Hello, this is Nisreen.
Welcome to the 12th episode of Season Two of my podcast—it’s lovely to speak with you again!

The other day, I visited New York City for the first time in my life. Though it was a short stay, the intense energy of this multicultural city truly overwhelmed me. Among the highlights there was one that stood out- visiting one of the city’s most famous cultural landmarks, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With its astounding collection of 1.5 million works, it was, of course, impossible to take everything in in a single day.

However, there was one painting in particular that seized my attention: The Rape of Tamar by Eustache Le Sueur, a French artist. The piece depicts a harrowing story from the Old Testament in which Amnon, the eldest son of King David, becomes consumed with desire for his half-sister, Tamar, and commits a terrible act of violence against her.

As heartbreaking as the theme is, I was mesmerised by the technical finesse of this artwork. It even inspired me to create my own fan art for this episode’s thumbnail. In today’s episode, I’ll break down what makes this painting such a remarkable example of the power of art.

1. Organic Composition

The composition of The Rape of Tamar is carefully calculated to guide the viewer's eye through the story. From the incident itself, to the reaction of bystanders, each element contributes to a visual narrative.

Notice the diagonal line created by the motifs in the piece. Starting with the pitcher in the bottom right, our gaze is drawn upward to the draped cloth around Tamar and Amnon. This leads to the upper-left corner of the painting, where we see the shadow crossing the column, and the fleeing servant.

What impressed me most was how the balance feels organic, yet deliberate. For example, the red canopy of the bed ends slightly short of the painting's edge. This slight offset creates a sense of grace and subtlety in the composition.

2. Effective Colours

The dominant colour in this piece is the deep red of the canopy, representing desire, danger, and alarm—perfectly capturing the horror Tamar faces.

The brightest element, however, Tamar's pearly white skin. Light falls particularly on her chest, drawing the viewer’s attention, and symbolising her innocence. The contrast between her purity and the red danger surrounding her is striking.

Amnon’s clothing features a similar colour tone to Tamar’s skin, but with a yellowish hue, distinguishing him. Meanwhile, Tamar’s blue drapery adds a cold, sombre accent to the scene. Interestingly, this blue hue reappears in the fleeing servant’s attire, visually connecting the characters and emphasising the emotional distance between the innocent and the aggressor.

This combination of delicate harmony and theatrical styling is a hallmark of Le Sueur’s artwork. Compared to the dramatic, high-contrast works of Baroque artists like Caravaggio or Velázquez, Le Sueur’s approach feels quintessentially French—restrained, and elegant.

3. Symbolic Use of Motifs

The painting’s attention to detail is also typical of 17th-century religious art.

For instance, there’s a red thread dropped on the floor, suggesting that Tamar—or perhaps the servant—was interrupted while knitting. This small detail symbolises the abrupt disruption of peace and creativity by Amnon’s violence.

Additionally, notice the two pitchers on the floor: one lies overturned under Tamar’s feet, spilling its water, while the other stands upright near Amnon. This asymmetry underscores the imbalance and devastation of the moment, further guiding our eyes through the unfolding tragedy.

4. A Tragic Backstory

In 2020, The New York Times published an article revealing the painting’s history, one as tragic as its subject matter. Court records suggest that this piece, acquired by The Met in 1984, was once owned by Siegfried Aram, a Jewish art dealer who fled Germany in 1933 during Hitler’s rise to power.

According to the records, Aram was forced to sell his home for far less than its value to a German businessman named Oskar Sommer, who allegedly took possession of Aram’s art collection. For over a decade after the war, Aram fought unsuccessfully to reclaim his painting.

The parallels between the painting’s story of power and domination, and the real-life persecution endured by Aram are chilling. Learning this history adds another layer of meaning to The Rape of Tamar, making it even more poignant.

Conclusion

Overall, The Rape of Tamar is a perfect example of art’s ability to convey deep human drama. Through its technical mastery and symbolic storytelling, it resonates across time and place, reminding us of the enduring relevance of these themes.
