[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 43: A Visit to Lilwen Jones’ Exhibition, Roots / Lilwen Jones

  Japanese follows English/

The other day, I attended the reception for Lilwen Jones’ exhibition, Roots, at Art Federation. Lilwen is a talented jewellery artist and photographer.

I met her at a drawing group, and she is featured in one of the drawings I’m planning to exhibit in my own show as well!

The exhibition showcases a wide range of her work, including glass art, metalworking, photography, and more. The common theme I felt throughout this diverse collection was a love of nature and a connection to one’s authentic self, as suggested by the exhibition title, Roots.

I purchased a beautiful pair of flower earrings — I love their natural feel!

The exhibition is open until 25 June 2026 at 5:00 pm. If you’re nearby, do pop in and have a look!

I became a piece of art!

A wonderful artist—and the facilitator of the live drawing group and museum shop manager at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette—LaDonna Vohar painted this beautiful artwork inspired by one of my wedding photographs by Liberte Me Studio in Nakano, Tokyo. Her delicate depiction of this happy moment in life and her observant eye for detail are exquisite.

Her exhibition, “LaDonna’s Mélange,” is open until May 10, 2026, at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette. She shows a great range as an artist, from poignant portraits to dynamic murals and playful furniture pieces. If you are nearby, I highly recommend visiting the exhibition!

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 36- Co-Leading a Live Music Workshop with an Oud Musician-

  Japanese follows English/

On 28 February 2026, I had the opportunity to co-conduct a Taqsim workshop with oud musician Andy Smith at the INBC Annual Bazaar. INBC is a non-profit organisation that supports dancers and musicians in Indiana and the surrounding areas.

Andy with the participants
Andy

With the participants

The workshop was originally Andy’s idea – and it was a brilliant one! We alternated in sharing the perspectives of a musician and a dancer on how to perform taqsim – an Arabic word for an improvised musical solo in traditional Middle Eastern, Arabic, Greek, and Turkish music. All the participants were very engaged despite the early morning schedule, asking great questions and sharing their own experiences.

This is a painting I created to express the joy of the teaching experience.

Although I couldn’t stay for the evening gala show, it was wonderful to meet the headliner, Tina Maric, who is a lovely person and an incredible dancer. She taught a very energetic and playful mejance choreography and drum solo.

As the PR Officer, it was very satisfying to see the event’s success after months of preparation and promotion.

Many thanks to the Event Director, April, the coordinator, Andy, and all the board members who worked tirelessly to make it happen – and, of course, to all the participants, instructors, performers, sponsors, and volunteers who contributed!

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 30–A Wonderful Night at the Raqs Party / アメリカ絵日記30 Raqs Partyで素晴らしい時間を過ごしました!

  Japanese follows English/

Hi everyone!
This is Nisreen — how are you doing?

On 6 December 2025, I had the privilege of being invited to the Raqs Party in Bloomington, organised by Donna Carlton. The hafla/show has been held every year since 2005. It was heart-warming to be part of such a beloved event alongside the wonderful local dancers for the second time. The host dancers, All About Bellydancers, always welcome us with warm hospitality.

I performed a solo piece to the live music “Zeina”, played by Indy Raqs. My goal was to bring the elegance of Samia Gamal — known for performing this classic song with her distinct coquettish style — into my own dance style. It was also lovely to dance to the beautiful oud improvisation by Andy Smith.

I also had the chance to perform a group piece, “Move Your Belly”, as part of Troupe Oasis — I love the dramatic song and the choreography by Dahlena. It was a joyful experience to dance with such lovely dance mates. The drawing below is my attempt to capture the harmony we felt while performing together.

I will also share the performance videos once I have access to them!

Hi all, this is Nisreen!
How are you enjoying 2025? I can't believe it's already February!

It’s still quite chilly in my town, and our pug boy is getting lazier by the day.

The other day, when I was taking him and his sister out for a walk, he refused to budge from the door! I ended up carrying him downstairs—something he’d never dare to pull with his dad. What a cheeky boy!

Of course, the moment he got outside, he strutted around like a little prince, as usual.

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 21-I Completed My Undergraduate Certificate in Fundamental Psychology! /

    Japanese follows English/

Hi all, this is Nisreen. How are you?

I have great news—I finally completed my undergraduate certificate in Fundamental Psychology! I began taking this online university course a year and a half ago.

My initial motivation was to fulfill the prerequisite requirements to potentially study art therapy in the future. Since I already had a bachelor's degree in graphic design from a university in Tokyo, I needed to obtain a degree in psychology as well.

I didn’t expect to enjoy learning so much about American society from a psychological perspective. It was fascinating to explore the deeper layers of both the challenges and hopes within this inspiring country.

This journey also helped me improve my English proficiency. Since all my previous academic education was in Japan, composing academic essays in English was a new challenge for me. I can't thank my husband, and our fur babies enough for supporting and believing in me throughout this process!

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 19-We went to Sophie Ellis-Bextor Concert!'

   Japanese follows English/

 Hi all! This is Nisreen.

The other day, I had the pleasure of attending a concert by British pop musician Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and it was my first time seeing her live!

Sophie is best known for her disco-inspired music and performances, especially her "Kitchen Disco" live streams during the COVID-19 lockdown, which brought joy to so many. Ive always enjoyed her music, as well as her podcast, where she interviews 'busy working women who happen to be mothers.'

Like A Prayer - Sophie Ellis-Bextor (Live on Instagram)

She was even better live than I expected! What stood out most was her natural, down-to-earth stage presence. It was refreshing to see someone so charismatic completely own the stage, while still coming across as a fun, loving, and relatable person. The audience adored her, and the way everyone danced together felt so wholesome, unlike the intense or fanatical crowds Ive seen elsewhere.

It also made me realise that the soft, yet strong, leadership she displayed on stage is something Id love to bring to my own performances. Even though I dance belly dance on a MUCH smaller scale, her style of connecting with the audience is something I truly admire and aspire to.

As soon as I went back to my hotel room, I did this quick sketch of her.

[Bilingual post] My Dance Journey

     Japanese follows English/

To be honest, there have been times when I questioned whether performing is really worth all the time, energy, and financial investment. It might have been a 'big city' thing -- in a place like Tokyo, it often feels like you're expected to have a cut-throat attitude, and compete constantly, which doesn't feel rewarding to me. But now that I’ve relocated to a smaller town in the States, I’ve rediscovered what performing arts, or any art form, truly means to me: it’s a universal language that lets you connect with people anywhere in the world. I’m so glad I didn’t stop exploring this art form, and that my journey continues.

[Bilingual post] Podcast Ep.18 Am I ' Stronger Than Yesterday' in the US?

     Japanese follows English/

Hello, this is Nisreen! Welcome to the 18th episode of my podcast!

Today's episode will be quite short, unlike my usual ones.

Please find the script and audio file below.
The episode is available on
on Apple Podcasts and Spotify

X Script

Hello, this is Nisreen! Welcome to the 18th episode of my podcast! It’s lovely to speak to you again.

Today's episode will be quite short, unlike my usual ones. The big news is—I finally started weight-lifting! As a dancer, I always knew that body strength is important. Unless you’re a dancer, you might not be aware of this, but you need arm strength in particular to move with poise. I’ve been doing push-ups for years, but that wasn’t enough.

Today though, I’d like to talk about another reason I realized my arms need more training.

As some of you may know, I moved from Japan to the United States nearly two years ago. One thing I’ve noticed is that it feels like the doors on buildings in the US are generally much heavier than those in Japan. I know this might come across as an odd observation, but I’m not the only one who thinks so! Several friends who have lived in both countries say the same thing. I find myself shaking with effort every time I hold the door for the person after me.

Another thing I noticed in my early days here was that I had a habit of making myself as compact as possible. For example, I used to hold my backpack in front of my body when walking on the street. This definitely came from the manners expected in a densely populated city like Tokyo. I also found myself hiding behind my husband, which he hated. He says he feels like a selfish macho poser when I walk behind him. I get that, but the habit was a result of being bumped into all the time on the small streets in Japan.

So, in a nutshell, I’m learning how to take up a little more space, and be physically stronger. I wonder if this experience resonates with those who live abroad, not only in Japan and the US but in other countries too. Please share your experiences as well!

What did you think? I’d be delighted if you wrote a review of this podcast on Apple Podcasts or gave a rating on Spotify. It would be lovely if you shared the episode on social media as well. And of course, you’re more than welcome to let me know your thoughts through the contact form in the description.

Thank you so much for listening. Goodbye for now!

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 18- 'Is this the Right Time to Ask a Question?' /

  Japanese follows English/

 Hi all! This is Nisreen.

One thing I used to do when making a phone call to a clinic or something in the early days in the States, which confused people was to say  'I have a question' or 'May I ask you a question about X?' and WAIT for them to say something. They, meanwhile, were WAITING for me to move on to the question. Of course, some people respond 'sure' or 'go on!' But there were many times when they were just silent. I wondered if they were there until they asked if I was there. lol

I think this is because the set phrases in similar situations in Japan: 'お訊きしたいことがありまして/I have a question' or 'お訊きしたいことがあるのですが今お時間よろしいでしょうか?/ Is this the right time to ask a question?' The set response is always something along the lines of 'はい、どういったことでしょうか?/Yes, what is it?'

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 17-Man's Best Friend /

 Japanese follows English/

 Hi all! This is Nisreen.

I have mentioned earlier how our dogs seem much happier in the US due to having more space. But I am also certain that their happiness comes from us spending more time with them.

Their ability to sense people's mood and body language often amazes me.

For example:

a) They know when I'm going out as soon as I put on a dress.

b) They know when I'm going out as soon as I put sunscreen on.

c) They know when I'm sad. They kiss me, and go to my husband to let him know I'm sad.

d) They know when our discussion is heating up. They behave goofily, and try to make peace.

e) They know when I'm not feeling well. They curl up next to me and sniff my mouth as if they can smell my illness.

f) They know when I am up, even if I stay quiet in my room. They cry in front of my door until I let them in.
