Hi everyone!
This is Nisreen — how are you doing?

On 6 December 2025, I had the privilege of being invited to the Raqs Party in Bloomington, organised by Donna Carlton. The hafla/show has been held every year since 2005. It was heart-warming to be part of such a beloved event alongside the wonderful local dancers for the second time. The host dancers, All About Bellydancers, always welcome us with warm hospitality.

I performed a solo piece to the live music “Zeina”, played by Indy Raqs. My goal was to bring the elegance of Samia Gamal — known for performing this classic song with her distinct coquettish style — into my own dance style. It was also lovely to dance to the beautiful oud improvisation by Andy Smith.

I also had the chance to perform a group piece, “Move Your Belly”, as part of Troupe Oasis — I love the dramatic song and the choreography by Dahlena. It was a joyful experience to dance with such lovely dance mates. The drawing below is my attempt to capture the harmony we felt while performing together.

I will also share the performance videos once I have access to them!

   Japanese follows English/

Hello, this is Nisreen! Welcome to the 20th episode of Season Two of my podcast! It’s lovely to speak with you again.

The other day, I heard some tragic news: legendary Turkish belly dancer Tanyeli had passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 54. I have been performing and teaching belly dance for years now, and Tanyeli has always been one of my dance icons.

Today, to celebrate the memory of her legacy, I’d like to highlight three aspects of her style that made her stage presence so unique. I hope this will help a broader audience appreciate her artistry, beyond just the belly dance community.

The thumbnail of this episode is my pen drawing of Tanyeli. Please find the episode below.

Introduction:
Hello, this is Nisreen.
Welcome to the 13th episode of Season Two of my podcast—it’s lovely to speak with you again!

Today, I’d like to talk about one of my favourite topics: belly dance costuming! I’ve been performing and teaching belly dance for years now, and I can’t deny that the sparkling costumes are a big part of this dance form’s charm. However, finding the right costume can be quite tricky because there’s such a vast range of designs to choose from.

In today’s episode, I’m going to share five points I’ve learned to pay attention to when buying a costume, based on years of trial and error. I hope you can relate to them!

1. Price
Not to be crass, but price matters. If you’re looking for a brand-new, professionally made, complete Oriental costume, the minimum price in the US is typically around $250. Those traditional beaded costumes require intricate hand sewing, although modern costumes tend to be simpler. If you’re looking for just a set of beaded bras and a belt without a skirt, I’d say $100 is the lowest price point for something that will last more than a few years.

The good news is, high-quality costumes can often be found at more affordable prices if they’re second-hand! Platforms like eBay, Facebook groups for dancers, or even your dance school can connect you to great deals.

Of course, if you don’t plan to perform professionally, you don’t need to purchase those fully beaded costumes. Simpler and cheaper options, such as crop tops and skirts, are available online as well.

2. Colour
Colour matters, of course—especially with the parts of the costume that touch your skin, like the bra or belt. These should flatter your skin tone. However, for items further from your face, like skirts or trousers, you can be a bit freer with colour choices.

Skin tones are generally categorised as warm, cool, or neutral. One simple way to identify your tone is to check the veins on your wrist. Makeup artist Brielle Brenner suggests:

Check the veins in your wrist—if they appear blue or purple, you likely have a cool undertone. If they look green, you most likely have a warm undertone. If you notice a mixture of both, you probably have a neutral or olive undertone.

By using this method, I discovered my skin tone is rather cool, which means colours like crimson, pale blue, lemon yellow, turquoise, and fuchsia suit me better than warmer tones like brown, coppery gold, or chestnut. Generally, silver or rose gold accessories complement cool-toned skin better than yellow gold.

The texture of fabric can also influence how a colour appears. For instance, velvet exudes elegance and maturity, while sheer fabrics like organdie or chiffon create an ethereal effect. It’s worth considering which textures flatter your skin tone, and suit your overall vibe.

3. Style
Belly dance styles vary, and so do costume styles! Your costume should align with your style of dance. For example, FCBD (FatChanceBellyDance) costuming is characterised by coin bras layered with crop tops, large flowers in the hair, hip scarves, and circular cotton skirts. This is quite different from Oriental dance costuming, which typically features simpler hairstyles, shiny or sheer skirts, or trousers.

Even within Oriental dance, there’s huge variety. The standard costume might include a beaded bra and belt over a long skirt, but there are also one-piece costumes or skirts with attached decorations.

Additionally, trends evolve rapidly. In recent years, we’ve seen less orthodox costumes from Egypt, such as miniskirts, or sheer onesies. Choosing the right style is a personal process, but it’s also about “reading the room” as a performer. You’ll need to ask yourself questions like: Is this style appropriate for the venue, audience, music, and myself?

4. Practicality
Let’s be honest—belly dance costumes are rarely practical or comfortable! However, certain features are essential, depending on the occasion.

For instance, if you’re performing alone without assistance, avoid halter-neck or cross-back straps, as they can be difficult to manage when changing. You don’t want to get stuck in your costume!

The weight of the costume also matters. Modern costumes tend to be lighter, as contemporary styles often require more acrobatic movements. The same goes for head accessories—if you’re planning to do head rolls, it’s best to skip these, unless you can remove them before executing those movements.

Preventing costume mishaps is also crucial. If you’re performing on stage, it’s essential to wear dance shorts or tights underneath your skirt—even if the skirt is long—to avoid any upskirt flashing. My preference is layering harem pants under my skirt, as it gives me confidence when performing kicks or floorwork.

Costumes should fit perfectly. I didn’t include size in the title of this section, because I’ve never found a costume in a store that fits me perfectly! After purchasing a costume, I always have it altered by a professional seamstress to ensure it fits exactly. This way, I can fully focus on performing. I learned this lesson after some unfortunate mishaps, like a moving hip belt or, worse, snapping a bra hook during a performance!

Finally, safety comes first.  There’s nothing more dangerous than stepping on your skirt, especially if you’re wearing heels. Ensure your skirt is the right length, and that you’re fully comfortable before performing.

5. Brand
I don’t prioritise costume brands, but it’s true that some brands have excellent reputations, but higher prices. For Turkish costumes, brands like Bella, Dogan Gök, and Sim are highly respected for their quality and unique designs. For Egyptian costumes, brands like Eman Zaki, Pharaonics, and Hoyda are internationally recognised.

Recently, costume makers from European and South American countries have also gained popularity. When shopping online, checking the brand can be one way to assess reliability.

That said, a costume maker’s lack of fame doesn’t necessarily mean low quality. My very first belly dance costume, purchased 15 years ago from an unknown Vietnamese maker for about $100, is still going strong—and I still receive compliments on it!

Conclusion
Ultimately, the most important criterion when choosing a costume is whether it helps you fully express yourself and the music on stage. Your costume is part of your art!

Closing:
How did you find today’s episode? I hope you enjoyed it!

Hello, this is Nisreen.
Welcome to the ninth episode of Season Two of my podcast—it’s lovely to speak with you again!

Today, I’d like to delve into how belly dancing has expanded my horizons.

I’ve been teaching and performing belly dance for years now. For those unfamiliar with the term, belly dance is a Western name for dance forms that originate from Middle Eastern, North African, Hellenic, and Turkic cultures. In Arabic, it’s called Raqs Sharqi, while in Turkish, it’s known as Oryantal Dans.

Although I’m not from these cultures, this beautiful dance form and its music have enriched my life in countless ways. This episode is my personal love letter to Oriental dance. I’ll break it down into five points:

1. It Opened My Eyes to the Complexities of Culture and History

As I mentioned, belly dance spans different regions and eras. Learning and experiencing, in my own body, how each style has complex cultural influences and aesthetics stirred my curiosity, and helped me develop a more nuanced view of the world.

For example, when watching an Egyptian dancer, you may first notice intricate hip movements like jiggling, or circular isolations—elements seen in many African countries. On the other hand, the fluid, undulating arm movements evoke influences from Central dance traditions, reflecting centuries of cultural exchange. These diverse elements come together seamlessly in Oriental dance.

I also had the chance to learn a style called American Cabaret, which evolved in North America. While it can be considered distinct from the dances of its countries of origin, it still carries their cultural legacies, and reflects the communal history of migrants.

Coming from Japan, where there’s often a strong “us vs. them” mentality that emphasizes clear-cut boundaries between  ‘local’ and ‘foreign’ culture, belly dance introduced me to a vast cultural intersection. It encouraged me to view the world and its history with more curiosity and nuance. It also made me more aware of global social issues, as they, too, are interconnected.

2. It Helped Me Get Comfortable in My Own Skin

Sensuality is integral to Oriental dance. To perform authentically, a dancer must fully embrace the joy they feel within their body. For me, this process of feeling at ease while dancing took years—it’s only recently that I’ve truly grown comfortable on stage.

In the beginning, my focus was very much on how dancing aligned with society’s standards of attractiveness, as portrayed in magazines or media. The physical fitness benefits of belly dance initially reinforced that mindset. Luxurious costumes and makeup also gave me a confidence boost.

But ironically, this experience ultimately led me to care less about appearances and focus more on my inner feelings. By appreciating what my body can do and feel, I overcame many internalized restrictions about how a woman’s body “should” be viewed or controlled.

3. It Freed My Playfulness and Creative Spirit

One of my favourite aspects of Oriental dance is its creative freedom. While it requires a foundation of solid dance skills, and musical understanding, once you’ve developed your persona as a dancer, you can choreograph your own pieces, or even improvise on stage.

It’s incredibly joyful to interpret music in my own way, using my body as a medium for expression. Even choosing the right costume and props is part of the creative process—it makes me as excited as a child opening Christmas presents!

My mum often jokes that I haven’t changed much since I was a four-year-old dressing up in a bin bag and handkerchief to look like a character from Arabian Nights!

4. It Saved Me from an Unhealthy Lifestyle

As a young girl, I assumed physical activity wasn’t for me—I spent most of my time drawing, and had very low physical strength. I was clumsy, often tripping over my own feet, and my spatial awareness wasn’t great, either.

Starting dance at 16 or 17 completely transformed me. It made me physically stronger and, in turn, boosted my confidence. I can’t imagine what my health would be like today if I hadn’t started dancing back then.

5. It Helped Me Build a Community on the Other Side of the World

I’ve mentioned this in my blog, but one of the things I’m most grateful for is belly dance’s international popularity. It feels like I have a home wherever I go in the world.

After moving from Japan to the US, belly dance helped me integrate into the local community and find a sense of belonging. It also showed me that nationality or ethnicity doesn’t ultimately matter in the world of dance.

I’m particularly thankful that belly dance gave me a transferable skill—something I could rely on when everything around me was new and unfamiliar.

Closing

I hope you enjoyed this episode and that my perspective gave you a deeper appreciation for belly dancing!

I’d love to hear your thoughts—please consider leaving a review or reaching out through the contact form linked in the description.

Thank you so much for listening. Goodbye for now!

[Bilingual post] My Dance Journey

     Japanese follows English/

To be honest, there have been times when I questioned whether performing is really worth all the time, energy, and financial investment. It might have been a 'big city' thing -- in a place like Tokyo, it often feels like you're expected to have a cut-throat attitude, and compete constantly, which doesn't feel rewarding to me. But now that I’ve relocated to a smaller town in the States, I’ve rediscovered what performing arts, or any art form, truly means to me: it’s a universal language that lets you connect with people anywhere in the world. I’m so glad I didn’t stop exploring this art form, and that my journey continues.

The term Belly dance is a western one for dance forms that originate in Middle Eastern, North African, Hellenic & Turkic countries. In Arabic, Belly dance is called Raqs Sharki. In Turkish, it’s known as Oryantal Dans or Oyun Havasi.  In the second episode of this podcast, I talked about a Turkish belly dancer called Tulay Karaca. This time, I’ll feature another iconic dancer and actress, Samia Gamal, one of my first dance idols. When I first watched her dance with a beautiful sheer veil in a film, I was totally mesmerised by her ethereal presence. I didn’t have much knowledge about the dance form back them, but I could immediately tell she was a unique artist.

So, who is Samia Gamal?  Samia Gamal was born in upper Egypt 1924. As a teenager, she began her dance career as an extra member of the dance troupe under Badia Masabni, the best-known entertainer of the times. She then found her way into the film industry as many other famous belly dancers did at the time. She was active in the cinema industry as a dancer and an actress from the 1940s to the early 1970s. This time period was called the Golden Era of Egyptian belly dance. In this episode, I’d love to focus on five elements that make her particularly distinguishable as a performer. I will also share her videos on my blog. I hope you enjoy it!

1: Lively shoulder and hand movement

When I think of Samia Gamal, I always think of her shrugging her shoulders a little bit and shaking her shoulders in a playful way.  The shoulder movement and continuous hand waving are Samia Gamal’s signature moves. Once you see them, you won’t forget them, because they’re so charming! If you compare her to other stars from the same era in Egypt, such as Naima Akef, Tahia Carioca, and Nawabeya Mustafa, you will notice how Samia Gamal’s upper body movement stands out with its fluidity and liveliness.  Other dancers from the same time period tended to emphasise their hip work more, while using their hands to frame their hips. I believe the Hollywood actor Rita Hayworth referred to Gamal’s flowy hand movements prior to her belly dance-inspired performance in the film Salome in 1953. No offense to the beautiful Hayworth, but seeing her rather awkward belly dance taught me how skilful as a dancer Gamal was. She just made it look easy!

2: Artistic self-presentation

Samia Gamal often showed up on screen with veils, either attached to her sleeves, or as a separate piece of fabric. By today’s standards, she may not appear to do flashy techniques with the veils. However, the way she used sheer piece of fabric to accentuate her motions was iconic. Behind or in front of the veils, she looked like a fairy princess. The same goes for her way of handling her flared chiffon skirts. She intentionally created beautiful shapes and movement in her costume as she stepped. Some pointed out the influence of her training in western dance forms such as Ballet and Ballroom Dance. Her presentation skills with the costumes and props also made her shine on screen.

3: Earthy and characteristic hip work

Gamal’s dance style is often described as fluid and lifted. However, it doesn’t mean that she didn’t have the earthy trait which is common in many Egyptian dancers. If you look at her lower body movement closely, you will notice how she’s following the down beat of the music most of the time, rather than the melodies. She often steps back diagonally on the beat, layering hip techniques on top of the steps. This may be the general characteristic of the time; her hip work was fluid and hit the accents when really needed. This relaxed approach may come across quite differently to the intricate and precise hip work which became one of the main attractions in modern belly dance performances after the 1990s.

4:  Iconic ‘traveling & leaning’

Samia Gamal also often travels across the floor, with the step called ‘Arabesque.’ It’s a little backwards kicking movement, very different from the Arabesque in Ballet.  There are also cases in which she just drags the last step a little bit- with the quick-quick-slow rhythm.  And sometimes, she leans slightly forwards as she slows down. This adds not only a coquettishness, but also dynamic, spontaneous feel to the traveling steps. In fact, I see similar ‘leaning’ in the dancers from younger generations such as Dina. I wonder if she was inspired by Gamal.

5: Expression of sensuality

Most of the video footages of her dancing we can access today are from films. So of course, she acts while dancing, too! She conveys sorrow, joy, defiance, and sensuality very naturally with her face. I am aware that there is a trend in the international belly dance community today to idealise the Golden Era dancers like Gamal as quote ‘demure and classy unlike those vulgar sexual dancers today’ unquote. But if we pay attention to the plot of the films, we will notice that those actresses were also presented as sex symbols in most cases, even though the expression of sexuality may be quite subtle to the modern audience’s eyes. For example, in the films such as ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves`’ from 1942, and ‘Little Miss Devil’  from  1949, Gamal’s role is mostly about seduction and flirtation. Her dance is presented as part of the seduction. We also need to consider that the social status of the dancers in  Egyptian society was, and remains, low, no matter how famous they are. For example, she had an 11-year relationship with the singer and composer Farid El Atrache who never married her. According to some, this is because he was from a Syrian Royal family and he could not defile his family by marrying a mere dancer. Though of course we never know what was going on with their relationship, I think it’s worth paying attention to that being a dancer could be a deal breaker. It makes me realise how courageous she was to express her sensuality through her dancing so openly and beautifully despite the social pressure.

What did you think?  I’d be delighted if you write a review of this podcast on Apple Podcasts or rating on Spotify. It would be lovely if you share the episode on social media as well. And of course, you’re more than welcome to let me know your thoughts from the contact form in the description. Thank you so much for listening. Goodbye for now!
