[Bilingual post] The Must-Watch Netflix Original Film -Yeh Ballet-/ 必見のNetflix映画「Yeh Ballet」
Hi all, This is Nisreen!
In the last post, I talked about books. Today, I'd love to talk about another source of inspiration for me -a good film!
Look at this first- this is
a billboard in a film showing event recently held in Delhi, India.
Can you see what's in it? That’s right – that’s my drawing about the film, Yeh Ballet directed by Sooni Taraporevala.
I found this photo of the
billboard on Instagram by coincidence, and was taken by surprise – delighted
-- to know that an organising committee member had found my drawing online and liked it
enough to use it in the billboard. I love this Netflix original film, and have
been painting pictures about it for a while.
Below, I'll list the five
main reasons why I find this film so wonderful. I hope this encourages more
people to watch this fantastic piece, which is based on the real story.
------------
1. The power of dreams
This may be common sense
anywhere, but ballet is expensive! And as a dancer myself (though a different
genre), I know how it's hard to pursue a dance career with economic
limitations.
The film is based on the incredible real-life story of the young ballet dancer Manish Chauhan, who actually plays one of the two protagonists, Nishu, in the film. Both Nishu and his competitor Asif (Achintya Bose) are from economically challenged backgrounds in Mumbai. They’re also known to be outstanding self-taught dancers in town. By accident, they fall in love with ballet, which had been so foreign and unfamiliar to them.
I was deeply inspired by
the way these two talented boys dream big and overcome their social boundaries
and obstacles with their passion. I’m pretty sure anyone watching the film would
root for them.
2.Family ties
As with many other Indian master pieces, this film is also about family ties. I really loved the scene where Nishu looks after his little sister in the hospital. It is a quiet scene but perfectly portrays his kindness. And the father-son relationship is really moving.
3. Faith in oneself
This story is also about pride and self-esteem. Nishu starts pursuing his dream with full force after being insulted about his low social status. Asif becomes a serious dance student after determining to change his way and make his family proud.
In addition, both Nishu and Asif stand up to their teacher and demand him treat them with respect. The phrase "I'm a dancer, not a servant!" represents the mindset we need to have as dancers.
I imagine it also shows the local people's point of view towards arrogant attitude of expats and tourists in their country. (Don't mistake Hindu for Hindi, guys...)
4. Religious diversity
You can also catch a
glimpse of conflicts around religions in India in this film. It is a brief
scene, but enough for us to contemplate how deep-rooted the issues have been. I
also love how friendships and romantic implications across religions still feel
natural and authentic.
In addition, there is
a sequence towards the end where you can see a Hindu temple and a Christian
church harmoniously being next to each other. And Nishu shows respect to both,
being Hindu himself. According to the director, this place is not a set, but a real
part of the street in Mumbai. It shows you another real aspect of the city
where different religious beliefs are coexisting.
5. Authenticity
As the director
mentioned here, we could say one of the typical characteristics
about mainstream Indian cinema is the star/fandom-centred culture, which I find
both attractive and possibly limiting. In that sense, "Yeh Ballet" is atypical even though the core message of the film is orthodox.
I also appreciate the street dance scenes with hip-hop elements. They are refreshing, have more of the "everyday-life" feeling to it, unlike the typical Bollywood choreographies with the grand costumes (though I love the typical dancing scenes too.)
Finally, my favourite
character was Asha (Mekhola Bose), because she feels like a real girl with real
feelings, not just a love interest with a pretty face! And of course, she’s a
charismatic dancer too.
