[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 47: Sweet or Savoury? How Food Means Different Things in Different Cultures/

 Japanese follows English/

Sweet or Savoury? How Food Means Different Things in Different Cultures

The same type of food can be thought of as sweet in one country and savoury in another. It's one of those small cultural differences that I always find fascinating, and it reminds me how differently people around the world think about food.

Pancakes

In Japan, when people hear the word pancake, they usually picture a fluffy, sweet pancake served with butter and maple syrup.

Elsewhere, however, there are plenty of savoury pancakes—or dishes that occupy a similar place in the local cuisine.

One example is kottu roti from Sri Lanka. It is made by chopping up flatbread and stir-frying it with vegetables, meat, eggs and spices. It's especially delicious with curry. Although it's quite different from what most Japanese people would imagine when they think of pancakes, it reminded me that foods made from flour certainly don't have to be sweet.

Mochi

The same kind of difference can be seen with mochi.

In Japan, saying "Let's have some mochi" could just as easily mean savoury dishes such as grilled mochi or ozōni (mochi soup), although sweet treats like ankoro mochi and kusamochi are, of course, also popular.

In the United States, on the other hand, the word mochi overwhelmingly refers to desserts, especially ice cream wrapped in mochi, similar to Yukimi Daifuku.

Personally, I'd love to see savoury mochi become better known overseas. It would be wonderful if it became common enough to be stocked in ordinary supermarkets rather than only Japanese grocery shops.

Pies

The same sweet-versus-savoury contrast appears with pies as well.

In Japan—and to a certain extent in the United States—the word pie often brings desserts such as apple pie or pecan pie to mind.

Britain, however, has a much richer tradition of savoury pies. Steak pies, fish pies, chicken pies and vegetable pies are all everyday comfort foods, and they're all delicious.

This always reminds me of A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. There's a scene in which Miss Minchin is furious because someone has eaten the meat pie she had been looking forward to after work. When I first read the book as a child, I remember thinking, "A meat pie must be incredibly good if she's that upset about it!"

It's a small scene, but it captures something distinctive about British food culture: pies are not just desserts—they're proper meals.

I donated this piece to the 2026 Artwork for the Animals fundraiser for Humane Indiana’s PAWS Resale Plus. It’s a creative way to support the animal shelter, where local artists create custom artwork based on photos provided by donors.

I painted an adorable dog named Axel using oil pastels!

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 40 Traveling with Your Dog? Here’s Everything You Need to Pack

 Japanese follows English/

How are you? I recently went on a road trip with our dogs, and it was such a fun experience! Before living with them, I had no idea how much dogs could love traveling and exploring new places. I also really appreciated how helpful dog-friendly hotels can be.

Here are some essentials (and a few nice-to-haves) that I found useful when traveling with your furry family. I didn’t mention harnesses, collars, and leashes because they’re obvious—but of course, they’re essential too!:

Plastic bags – Great for collecting rubbish. Hotel room bins are often too small, so these really come in handy.

Blanket – Keeps your dog comfortable, and familiar smells can help calm them in a new environment.

Slippers – You don’t want to step on water drips—or worse, their bones! Hotel floors aren’t always as clean as they look, and bathroom tiles can be cold. Slippers keep your feet warm, clean, and protected.

Pet wipes – Especially essential for breeds like pugs. Daily cleaning (wrinkles, paws, etc.) becomes even more important when traveling.

Portable pet bowls – Convenient for both food and water, especially during rest stops on long drives.

Ties – Because our babies should always be fashionable.

Treats & dog food – A must. I recommend avoiding unfamiliar or wet food, as it can upset their stomachs.

Pee pads – Go for big, thick ones—just in case.

Disinfectant spray – Always be prepared for little mishaps, no matter how well-behaved your pups are.

Grooming supplies – Keep them clean, brushed, and comfortable throughout the trip.

Needless to say, don’t forget any necessary medications, medical equipment, or jackets for colder weather.

      Japanese follows English/

Hello, this is Nisreen. Welcome to the 16th episode of Season Two of my podcast! It’s lovely to speak with you again.

The other day, I watched Paddington in Peru, the third film in the British family comedy series. Directed by Paul King, the series is based on Michael Bond’s beloved children’s books, first published in 1958.

In this episode, I’d like to share three reasons why I see Paddington Brown as a role model. There will be spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the films and don’t want to ruin the fun, please come back later! I hope you enjoy it.

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 21-Weight of Love /

    Japanese follows English/

Hi all, this is Nisreen!
How are you enjoying 2025? I can't believe it's already February!

It’s still quite chilly in my town, and our pug boy is getting lazier by the day.

The other day, when I was taking him and his sister out for a walk, he refused to budge from the door! I ended up carrying him downstairs—something he’d never dare to pull with his dad. What a cheeky boy!

Of course, the moment he got outside, he strutted around like a little prince, as usual.

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 17-Man's Best Friend /

 Japanese follows English/

 Hi all! This is Nisreen.

I have mentioned earlier how our dogs seem much happier in the US due to having more space. But I am also certain that their happiness comes from us spending more time with them.

Their ability to sense people's mood and body language often amazes me.

For example:

a) They know when I'm going out as soon as I put on a dress.

b) They know when I'm going out as soon as I put sunscreen on.

c) They know when I'm sad. They kiss me, and go to my husband to let him know I'm sad.

d) They know when our discussion is heating up. They behave goofily, and try to make peace.

e) They know when I'm not feeling well. They curl up next to me and sniff my mouth as if they can smell my illness.

f) They know when I am up, even if I stay quiet in my room. They cry in front of my door until I let them in.

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 15 -Fur Babies in the Nature -/

   Japanese follows English/

 Hi all! This is Nisreen.

Some of you may know that I live in a semi-rural area of the US. Whenever I tell the local people that I'm from Tokyo, they often look a little sympathetic, saying something along the lines of  'that must be a huge change- from a big city like Tokyo to this town!'  However, I'm pretty content with the quiet life here, mainly because our two dogs seem much happier.

Behind our house, we can just let them go off-leash, which never happened in Tokyo. The dogs run around freely, with huge smiles on their faces. One issue is, though, that what we call 'smelly' or 'disgusting' is intriguing and entertaining to them! They love rolling around in the mud, or other stuff that we don't really want to know about. I wonder if washing them in the shower makes any difference in the long run, because they always end up filthy! And they seem to find my anxious face when they're naughty very entertaining.
