[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 48: Thank You for Attending My First Solo Art Show Reception!/

 Japanese follows English/

Hi, this is Nisreen!

On September 4th, I attended the reception for my first solo exhibition, Dreaming of Tomorrow.

It was so moving, and almost surreal, to witness the show finally coming to life.

I applied for this opportunity one and a half years ago, having no idea that I would end up giving birth to my first child just before the show opened.

There would have been literally no way for this to happen without the warm support I received — especially from the coordinator, Abigail, who was so lovely and flexible, making all the adjustments I needed; from the marvelous artist and friend, Grace, and her husband, Kevin, who helped me install the show; and, needless to say, from my husband, Subo, who has been a superhero and supported me in every possible way.

One of the key elements of this show is connections that transcend borders and categories. The experience of bringing this exhibition to life has made me see that again and again.

The show will be on view through September 25th at Arts Federation. Please do pop by and leave a message if you happen to be nearby!

Love,

Nisreen

Love,

Nisreen

     Japanese follows English/

Hi all,

This is Nisreen!

The other day, my love Subodhana Wijeyeratne’s sci-fi novel Triangulum was nominated as a finalist for the prestigious Philip K. Dick Award!

This gave us a great opportunity to attend the nomination ceremony and panel discussions at Norwescon in Seattle.

Though Subo didn’t win, I was so proud to witness him reading his work and connecting with his readers, alongside all the other fantastic nominees!

What struck me about Norwescon was how family-friendly it was—I saw kids, dogs, people in wheelchairs, gender-nonconforming folks—everyone coming together and sharing their passion for science fiction and fantasy.

In my home country, Japan also has remarkably vibrant “nerd” cultures and communities, such as the Tokyo Comic Market I once had a peek at, but I always get the impression that their primary targets are loner adults, not families.

It was also lovely to be warmly welcomed as my big nerd’s plus-one by the community, and to see him glowing as he nerded out during the discussions too!

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 22 – I Had a Blast at Habibi Dancers’ 41st Annual Spring Workshop & Concert / アメリカ絵日記22 楽しかったHabibi Dancers 春のイベント

     Japanese follows English/

Hello  this is Nisreen, how are you?

On April 12–13, 2025, I had the great opportunity to attend all three workshops led by the London-based Turkish star Mr. Özgen at the Habibi Dancers’ 41st Annual Spring Event. I also had the joy of performing a Turkish pop duet with my dear dance friend and Troupe Oasis director, Deborah Kull.

I originally learned the choreography Kadehinde Zehir Olsa from another wonderful Turkish teacher, Serkan, in Tokyo about five years ago, and performed it with my dance mate Farhana in Yokohama. It was wonderful to revisit and improve my performance this time around, and such fun to share and practise it with Deborah.

With Deborah

Although I have taken online classes with Mr. Özgen before, this was my first time meeting and learning from him in person. His dance style is like a kaleidoscope – graceful yet energetic, masculine yet feminine, classic yet creative – a beautiful diversity embodied in one person. His arm movements, especially, were even more mesmerising in real life.

As I danced in the same room with him, I found myself reflecting on the meditative aspect of dance. As a serious dancer, it’s easy to fall into the temptation of categorising everything in a cut-and-dried way, but the free energy he brought to both the studio and stage reminded me that dance can liberate both body and spirit in a way that transcends borders or labels.

With Mr. Ozgen and Deborah

I am so grateful to Mr. Özgen for travelling all the way from London, and to the organiser, Garnett Kepler, and the Habibi Dancers for putting together such an amazing event!

The image below is my drawing of Mr. Özgen.

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 21- INBC Annual Bazaar Success!

    Japanese follows English/

Hello Nisreen, how are you? It looks like spring is finally around the corner!

On Saturday March 1st, 2025, we held the INBC Annual Bazaar in Indianapolis. This was the first bazaar since I became the PR officer last October.

At first, I was a little nervous about the lower engagement and bookings in the event ads, to be honest. However, in the end, the event turned out to be a great success, with many participants and a fantastic audience for the gala show.

More than anything, it was incredibly rewarding to see people connect and support each other through their love for this beautiful and diverse dance form! All the board members, including our president April, have been nothing but excellent and hardworking.

This year’s workshop lineup was particularly unique, featuring multiple sessions by musicians. Our headliner, Istra, brought her strong theatre background into her teaching, providing warm and insightful guidance to her students. It was wonderful to witness their creativity flourish.

As for me, I ended up stepping in at the last minute to assist a musicality workshop run by musician Andy from a dancer's perspective and also performed a completely improvised piece to his original song, Khamsa, filling a last-minute spot in the gala show.

The video below is my performance to Azisa:

It was definitely a challenge but such a fun experience! Andy’s workshop was incredibly well-prepared and packed with information—I can't even imagine how he managed to do that alongside all the work he put in as an event coordinator!

It was also so lovely to perform a group choreography, Eh Ya Weleda (choreographed by Kat Lebo) as a part of Troupe Oasis.

I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this event and for allowing me to be a part of it!

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 20- Dance Community Rocks‼ /

   Japanese follows English/

Hi all, this is Nisreen. How are you? I can't believe it's already October!

In September, Troupe Oasis, the dance troupe I’m a part of, took on the exciting challenge of hosting our first all-day event, sponsored by the Indiana Belly Dance Collective (INBC).

The whole experience reminded me of how thankful I am for our dance community’s warmth. It wasn’t just about learning new techniques—it was truly about spending time together and sharing our love for dance!

In the videos below, you can check out an interview with our director, Deborah, in which she shares her thoughts on the event.

We kicked off the day with a variety of dance workshops (I had the opportunity to teach two of them!), enjoyed a lively drum circle, and even watched a movie starring the iconic Egyptian actress Samia Gamal f. And of course, we had a delicious potluck lunch!

The day concluded with a gala show featuring incredible performers, including the fantastic band Indy Raqs, with talent from across the states.

As the PR person for the show, I couldn’t be prouder of how well it went. The last few months have been filled with non-stop posts and updates about the event—which left me feeling the way I’ve depicted in the attached image! It feels like all of our hard work, from the volunteers, INBC, and our amazing director Deborah, really paid off! 😄

    Hi all, this is Nisreen!

The other day, for the first time since moving to the USA, I went and stayed out of town for a belly dance event: INBC Summer's End Belly Dance Fest. I had the great luxury of taking a workshop with Phaedra, a wonderful Chicago-based dancer, throughout the day. I also got to perform as a soloist and a Troupe Oasis member at the gala show in the evening.

It was also my very first time to learn how to use a fan veil, but I could learn a lot at the workshop, since Phaedra thoroughly taught us the basics. I also discovered a lot about shimmy variations.

As a member of Troupe Oasis, I performed Move Your Belly, choreographed by Dhalena. It is my favourite piece in Troupe Oasis' repertoire, featuring a dramatic song, and beautiful choreography.

With everyone before the performance. I was in my jacket because I'm an always-cold person.

Below is a picture of Deborah, Kelly, and me performing in harmony.

I performed solo to a song called ‘My Love’ by the Turkish band Harem. I was particularly excited, as it had been a while since I had performed to Turkish music. I enjoyed doing the floor work, and seeing the enthusiasm of the audience. Phaedra's kind comments about the performance in the dressing room also made me feel very happy.

The full performance video is available on YouTube.

I would like to thank Phaedra, the INBC staff, all the musicians, all my dance colleagues and the audience.

2 Mosey

Hi to all, This is Nisreen.

We had the last Mosey this year on 2nd September. Mosey is a street festival that takes place once a month from May to September each year.

I participated as a part of the belly dance group Troupe Oasis and this was my first Mosey experience since moving to the US. I performed each time except May and August!

I had performed in various places in Tokyo, such as restaurants and halls, but this was actually my first experience of performing outdoors.

With the help of Deborah, the director, and all the kind members of the team, I enjoyed every moment of Mosey.

I performed to 8-10 songs each time, including solo and group numbers, so changing was quite a work!

I know changing wasn't an obligation, but I changed plenty anyway for the desire to look different every time and to match the music.

The highlight of the whole festival was this little boy who approached me during the performance and excitedly waved hands at me.
