Have you watched the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, yet? I watched it as soon as it was released, and left the cinema feeling deeply emotional. It took me a while afterwards to gather my thoughts.
In today’s episode, I’d like to highlight three aspects that made Michael a compelling film not only for MJ fans, but for anyone who cares about art. There will be spoilers, so please come back later if you’d prefer not to spoil the experience for yourself! I will show the process of drawing the thumbnail in the background of the YouTube video.

Hello, this is Nisreen — welcome to the tenth episode of
Season Three of my podcast!
Have you watched the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, yet? I watched it as soon as it was
released, and left the cinema feeling deeply
emotional. It took me a while afterwards to gather my thoughts. As a
long-time MJ fan, I was mesmerised by how perfectly Jaafar Jackson and Juliano Krue Valdi captured MJ’s mannerisms —
especially his speaking voice! And of
course, experiencing his music through a cinema sound system was spectacular
entertainment in itself.
However, were the music and dancing the film’s only
highlights? Is it merely “a mediocre movie
heavily dependent on the actors’ performances,” as some critics
have claimed,? Well, I don’t think so. In today’s episode, I’d like to
highlight three aspects that made Michael a compelling film not only for
MJ fans, but for anyone who cares about art. There will be spoilers, so please
come back later if you’d prefer not to spoil the experience for yourself!
1. The Portrayal of Joe Jackson
To be honest, I think the person who added the greatest
depth and nuance to this film is Colman Domingo, who played MJ’s father, Joe. I
was surprised by how much narrative weight Joe carried in the film — at its
core, it is largely about how MJ became his own artist by freeing himself from
his father’s control. The film does not delve deeply into MJ’s psychology,
which may support critics’ arguments that it is a simplistic fairy tale.
However, Joe’s portrayal is far too fascinating for him to be reduced to a simple villain. He is, indeed, terrifying. I have
to admit that I sobbed like a baby during the scene in which he whipped the
young MJ. His eyes, his voice — everything captured the presence of a monstrous
dictator within the household. At the same time, he is also portrayed as human.
There is something earnest in his voice when he tells his sons that they must
work together as the Jackson 5, rather than as individuals. Likewise, there is
some truth in his claim that the only way for MJ to truly heal after an injury is
to return to the stage. In some ways, Joe is right — without his discipline,
the superstar Michael Jackson may never have existed. This perhaps explains why
it is so difficult to cut ties with one’s parents, no matter how abusive they
may be: they are also a major part of one’s identity, deeply woven into the fabric of one’s life.
Additionally, when MJ encounters his father after his first cosmetic
surgery, what we see on Joe’s face is not only his usual mockery, but a slight
hint of hesitation. Perhaps it briefly occurs to him that his past comments
contributed to his son changing his nose — but only for a moment. He neither
communicates this feeling, nor reflects on it deeply. Domingo’s facial
expression here is excellent. It captures the way some men react when they do
not know how to express — or even fully acknowledge — their own emotions. There
is a certain vulnerability in it. None of this justifies Joe’s violence, of
course, but it does raise an important question: did he truly love his son? This
interpretation also connects closely to MJ’s own words from his 2001 OxfordUnion speech. He reflected on how difficult Joe’s life must have been growing
up as a poor Black man in the South, and said:
“Is it any wonder that he found it difficult to expose
his feelings? Is it any mystery that he hardened his heart, that he raised the
emotional ramparts? And most of all, is it
any wonder why he pushed his sons so hard to succeed as performers, so that
they could be saved from what he knew to be a life of indignity and poverty?”
2. Nods to MJ’s Own Words
As mentioned earlier, this film contains multiple references
to MJ’s own words and artistic expressions. The scene in which he tells his
mother that he cannot make friends because other children do not see him as a
normal child closely reflects what he wrote in his 1988 autobiography, Moonwalk.
Likewise, the heartbreaking scene in which the young MJ locks himself in the
bathroom in a panic strongly parallels the beautiful self-portrait featured in
the booklet for the HIStory album. Some may call this approach
one-sided. However, when telling the life story of someone who is no longer
alive, and therefore unable to share their perspective, referencing their own
words and artistic expressions can be one of the most ethical ways of
portraying them. It also gives the film a sense of authenticity, rather than
making it feel like merely an epic spectacle.
3. Commentary on Masculinity
The contrast
between the model of masculinity embodied by Joe and the one presented by MJ is
striking. MJ is portrayed as a sensitive, dreamy, and deeply empathetic person
— almost the complete opposite of the traditional macho archetype. The making
of the Beat It music video also reinforces this anti-macho message,
portraying the desire to protect one’s life and preserve peace as a form of
true strength.
This theme overlaps with the climax of the film, in which MJ
announces that he is leaving the Jacksons. Although he never fully brings
himself to confront Joe directly “looking into his eyes”, he establishes his
own boundaries in that moment. This may inspire viewers — especially young men
— to build their own models of masculinity, even though doing so can be
especially difficult when one has a strained relationship with one’s father.
Overall, Michael is an entertaining musical film that
sheds light on the words, artistry, and achievements of one of the most
important musicians in history, while also portraying the complexity of
father-son relationship. The film also strongly suggests that this is only Part
One, meaning there will likely be a sequel. I am very curious to see the second
part as well. I would definitely recommend watching the film if you are
interested in these themes.

Jacksonの伝記映画『Michael』をご覧になりましたか？ 私は公開されてすぐに映画館へ足を運びました。そして鑑賞後、胸がいっぱいになったまま劇場を後にしました。感想を整理するまでには少し時間が必要だったほどです。長年のMJファンとして、Jaafar
JacksonとJuliano
Krue ValdiがMJの仕草や話し方を驚くほど完璧に再現していたことに本当に圧倒されました。特に話し声はそっくりでしたね！ そしてもちろん、映画館の音響で彼の音楽を体験すること自体が、それだけで素晴らしいエンターテインメントでした。
しかし、この映画の魅力は音楽やダンスだけだったのでしょうか？批評家が言うように、「俳優の演技力に大きく依存した凡庸な映画」にすぎないのでしょうか？ 私はそうは思いませんでした。
今回のエピソードでは、『Michael』が単なるMJファン向け作品ではなく、「アート」に関心のあるすべての人にとって魅力的な映画となっている理由を、3つの観点からお話ししたいと思います。なお、ここからはネタバレを含みますので、まだ映画をご覧になっていない方はぜひ鑑賞後に聴いてみてくださいね。
1. Joe Jacksonの描写
正直に言って、この映画に最も深みと複雑さを与えていた人物は、MJの父Joeを演じたColman
Domingoだったと思います。私は、Joeがここまで物語の中心を担っていることに驚きました。この映画は「MJが父親の支配を断ち、アーティストとしての自己を確立していく物語」となっています。
実は、MJ本人の心理については、そこまで深く掘り下げられていません。その点については、「単純化されたおとぎ話だ」という批評にも一理あるのかもしれません。一方で、Joeの描かれ方については、単なる悪役として片付けられない奥深さがあります。
彼は確かに恐ろしい人物です。幼いMJをベルトで叩く場面では、私は子どものように泣いてしまいました。目つきや声など、家庭内に君臨する“怪物的な独裁者”としての存在感が圧倒的でした。
その一方で、彼は「人間」としても描かれています。息子たちに「Jackson
5として団結しなければならない、個人では駄目だ」と語る場面には、どこか真摯さが感じられるのです。また、怪我をしたMJのことを「あいつが本当に回復するにはステージに戻るしかないんだ」と言う場面にも、ある意味では真実があります。
見方によってはJoeは正しいのです。彼の厳格さがなければ、“スーパースター
Michael Jackson”は存在しなかったかもしれない。これは、どんなに虐待的な親であっても、縁を切ることが難しいのはなぜか、という理由につながります。親とは単なる加害者ではなく、子の人格の大きな一部であり、人生から簡単に切り離せる存在ではないからです。
また、MJが最初の美容整形手術後に父親と対面するシーンも非常に印象的でした。いつもの暴君の表情の中に、一瞬だけ“ためらい”のようなものが見えるのです。
もしかすると彼は、その瞬間だけは、自分が過去に息子へ向けた言葉が鼻の整形へ繋がったのかもしれない、と気づきかけたのではないでしょうか。しかし、それは本当に一瞬です。彼はその感情を言葉にすることもなければ、深く向き合うこともありません。
ここでのDomingoの表情は本当に素晴らしいです。「自分の感情をどう表現すればいいかわからない、あるいは自分自身でも十分に認識できていない男性」の姿が見事に表現されていました。そこにはある種の脆さも感じられます。
もちろん、だからといってJoeの暴力が正当化されるわけではありません。しかし、「彼は本当に息子を愛していたのか？」という重要な問いは浮かび上がってきます。
そしてこの解釈は、2001年、Oxford
UnionでMJ自身が語った言葉とも深く重なっています。MJは、南部で貧しい黒人男性として育ったJoeの人生がどれほど過酷なものだったかについて、思いを馳せてこう述べています。
以下引用です。「（そんな状況で）彼が感情を閉ざしていたことを疑問に思う人がいるでしょうか？心の壁を高く築き、自分を守っていたとして何が意外でしょうか？そして何より、彼自身が知っていた“屈辱と貧困の人生”から救おうと、息子たちを成功へと厳しく追い立てたことに、何の不思議があるでしょうか？」以上引用です。
2. MJ自身の言葉へのオマージュ
先ほども触れたように、この映画にはMJ自身の言葉や表現への引用やオマージュが数多く含まれています。
たとえば、幼いMJが「普通の子どもとして見てもらえないから友達ができない」と母親に語る場面は、1988年の自伝『Moonwalk』に書かれている内容に沿っています。
また、幼いMJがパニック状態で浴室に閉じこもる場面は、『HIStory』のアルバムのブックレットに掲載されたMJ自身による自画像のポーズを強く想起させます。
本人が残した表現を中心に語る手法を「偏っている」と考えることもできるかもしれません。しかし、すでに亡くなっていて自分自身の視点を語ることのできない人物の人生を描く際、その人自身の言葉や芸術表現を参照することは、最も倫理的な描き方のひとつなのではないかと私は思います。
それによって、この映画は単なる“大作スペクタクル”ではなく、どこか本人の息遣いが感じられる作品になっているのです。
3. 男性としての在り方への問い
Joeが体現する男性像と、MJが示す男性像の対比も非常に印象的でした。
MJは、繊細で夢見がちな、深い共感力を持つ人物として描かれています。いわゆるマッチョな男性像とはほとんど正反対です。
また、『Beat
It』のミュージックビデオ制作の場面でも、この「アンチ・マッチョ」的メッセージは強調されています。命を守ること、平和を維持することこそが本当の強さなのだ、と描かれているのです。
このテーマは、映画終盤でMJがJacksonsからの脱退を宣言する場面にも重なります。彼は最後までJoeを真正面から「目を見て」対峙することはできません。しかし、その瞬間に彼は自分自身の境界線を確立しているのです。
これは特に若い男性の観客にとって、自分らしい男性としての在り方を築く勇気を与えるものかもしれません。父親との関係が複雑であればあるほど、それはなおさら難しいことだからです。
全体として『Michael』は、歴史上最も重要な音楽家の一人であるMichael
Jacksonの言葉、芸術性、功績に光を当てながら、同時に父と息子の複雑な関係性を描いた、非常にエンターテインメント性の高いミュージカル映画でした。これらのテーマに興味がある方には、ぜひ鑑賞をおすすめしたい作品です。
なお、映画の最後では、続編が出る可能性が強く示唆されています。私自身、第二部をとても楽しみにしています。
