In this
episode, I’m introducing three Golden Age films that are perfect for
Valentine’s Day. This time, they’re all American classics—I hope you enjoy
them!
1. It Happened One Night
(1934)
It Happened One Night is a
black-and-white romantic comedy directed and co-produced by Frank Capra. The
story follows spoiled heiress Ellen
"Ellie" Andrews, who runs away to her boyfriend Westley against the
wishes of her wealthy father. Determined to reunite with Westley, she boards a
Greyhound bus to New York City, where she meets Peter Warne, a recently
unemployed newspaper reporter. Recognizing her, Peter offers a deal: if she
gives him an exclusive on her story, he’ll help her reach Westley; if not, he’ll
inform her father of her whereabouts.
Clark Gable shines as the charming yet cynical
reporter Peter, while Claudette Colbert brings a coquettish charm to Ellie. As
a road-trip film, It Happened One Night
masterfully turns even small moments into thrilling adventures, making the
audience feel as if they’re traveling alongside the characters.
This film also established one of the most iconic
tropes in American romantic stories: a beautiful, proud upper-class heroine
falling for a free-spirited, working-class hero, who in turn is torn between
his personal goals and his growing love for her. Sound familiar? We see this
same dynamic in later films like Roman Holiday, Lady
and the Tramp, and Titanic! Exploring the roots
of romantic comedy through this film would be a fun Valentine’s Day activity,
especially since its humour remains timeless.
2. Some Like It Hot
(1959)
Some
Like It Hot, directed,
produced, and co-written by Billy Wilder, is one of the most beloved Marilyn
Monroe films. The story follows two musicians, Joe and Jerry, who witness a mob
hit and in order to avoid being killed, disguise themselves as women—Josephine
and Daphne—to join an all-female band. As they
try to maintain their cover, they both become enamoured
with the band’s captivating singer, Sugar, played by Marilyn Monroe.
Admittedly,
Sugar is a stereotypical "air-headed blonde", but Monroe’s impeccable
comedic timing and sultry yet heartfelt singing make her performance
unforgettable. Her smooth, jazzy vocals add an irresistible charm to the film,
making it both sensual and heartwarming.
Despite
the fact that Joe and Jerry spend most of the movie deceiving Sugar, and others,
without facing real consequences, the film’s light-hearted tone keeps audiences
laughing from start to finish.
A BBC article even called it “boldly inclusive,”
tying into the film’s legendary final line: "Nobody’s perfect."
This sense of warmth and acceptance makes Some Like It Hot a fun and
uplifting watch for Valentine’s Day.
3. Love in the Afternoon
(1957)
Another
Billy Wilder film, Love in the Afternoon stars Audrey Hepburn as the innocent
and quirky Ariane Chavasse, and Gary Cooper as the much older playboy, Frank
Flannagan. While Hepburn was 28 at the time, she perfectly captures the
wide-eyed wonder of a young woman in her early twenties.
One of the
most memorable aspects of this film is its soundtrack. Each time Ariane and
Frank meet, the beautifully orchestrated melody Fascination plays in the
background, enhancing their romance. The music alone draws the audience into
their world, making their connection feel even more intense.
However,
beneath its romantic charm, the film carries a bittersweet undertone. Frank’s
long history of hedonism serves as a constant reminder that he and Ariane come
from vastly different worlds.
Scholar Marilyn Throne noted in a
1989 article that
the film reflects the contradictory expectations of 1950s women: they were
expected to accept men’s sexual freedom, while maintaining their own purity. At
the same time, they were expected to “tame” the playboy and "cure"
his bad behaviour.
Although I
find these expectations outdated and unrealistic, the way these two vastly
different individuals are drawn to each other feels genuine. This blend of
realistic human emotions and dreamy, elegant settings is a hallmark of Billy
Wilder’s films—and one of the many reasons I love his work.
Conclusion
These
three classic films are full of charm, optimism, and romance, featuring
top-notch acting and unforgettable music. They’re worth watching not just once,
but again and again—especially on Valentine’s Day!

というわけで今回は、愛の日にぴったりの、アメリカ映画黄金時代の名作を3本ご紹介したいと思います。楽しんでいただければ嬉しいです。
1. It Happened One Night
邦題：或る夜の出来事 (1934)
『ある夜の出来事』は、フランク・カプラが監督・共同製作したロマンティック・コメディです。物語は、財閥のお嬢様エレン・「エリー」・アンドリュースが、裕福な父親の意に反して恋人のウェズリーを追いかけ家出をするところから始まります。
ウェズリーとの再会を決意し、ニューヨーク行きのグレイハウンド・バスに乗り込んだ彼女は、そこで失業中の新聞記者ピーター・ウォーンと出会います。エリーの正体に気付いたピーターは、特ダネを提供してくれればウェズリーと会えるよう手助けをする、そうでなければ彼女の父親に居場所を知らせると取引を持ち掛けます。
クラーク・ゲーブルは皮肉屋で男前の記者ピーターにぴったりですし、クローデット・コルベールは可愛らしく目が離せないヒロインを完璧に体現していたと思います。
映画の大部分が二人の逃避行を描いているわけですが、さりげない瞬間もワクワクさせるように描いてあるため、登場人物たちと一緒に旅をしているような気分になります。
またこの映画は、アメリカの恋愛物語における代表的な型を確立した作品だと思います。美しく誇り高い上流階級のヒロインが、自由奔放な労働者階級のヒーローに恋をし、ヒーローは自分の目的と、深まる彼女への想いの間で葛藤するー聞き覚えがあるのではないでしょうか？
『ローマの休日』、『わんわん物語』、『タイタニック』といった後の映画にも、同じ枠組みが見られます。
この映画を通してロマンティック・コメディのルーツを探るのは、愛の日にぴったりな楽しみだと思います。１００年近く前の作品ながら、今観ても十分面白い映画です。
2. Some Like It Hot
邦題：お熱いのがお好き (1959)
ビリー・ワイルダーが監督・製作・共同脚本を手がけた『お熱いのがお好き』は、マリリン・モンローの代表作のひとつです。
物語は、ジョーとジェリーという2人の男性音楽家が殺人場面を目撃し、殺されるのを避けるため、ジョセフィーヌとダフニーという女性に変装して女性だけのバンドに紛れ込むというものです。変装を続けるうちに、ふたりはマリリン・モンロー演じるバンドの魅惑的な歌手、シュガーに夢中になります。
シュガーの人物造形は「お馬鹿な金髪娘」というステレオタイプなのですが、モンローの絶妙な茶目っ気のある演技と、艶のある歌声が、彼女の存在感を特別なものにしています。
モンローのJazz風の歌唱が発揮される場面と、内側から輝くような表情の一つ一つがあったからこそ、この映画はここまで印象深いものになったのでしょう。
よく考えると、ジョーとジェリーはシュガーに対して嘘をつき通しておりお世辞にも誠実とは言えませんし、またそれが特に制裁を受けるわけでもありません。しかし、この映画は不思議と、一貫して笑いに満ちた軽やかなものになっています。
BBCの記事は、この映画の持つ魅力を「大胆な包容力」と評しています。これは、この映画の伝説的な最後のセリフ「Noone’s perfect」とつながるものです。この温かさと受容の感覚は、ヴァレンタインズデーにぴったりなものではないでしょうか。
3. Love in the Afternoon
邦題：昼下がりの情事 (1957)
もうひとつのビリー・ワイルダー作品『昼下がりの情事』は、オードリー・ヘプバーンが風変わりなヒロイン、アリアーヌ・シャヴァースを演じ、ギャリー・クーパーが年上の遊び人、フランク・フラナガンを演じています。
ヘプバーンは当時28歳なのですが、20代前半の若く無邪気な雰囲気そのものです。
この映画で最も印象深いのは、その音楽でしょう。アリアーヌとフランクが出会うたびに、オーケストラが奏でる『Fascination』の美しい旋律が流れ、2人の逢瀬を盛り上げます。この音楽には、観客を2人の世界に引き込む強い磁力があるのです。
しかし、そのうっとりするような魅力の裏には、陰りも感じられます。フランクが長年築き上げてきた遊び人としての評判は、彼とアリアーヌがまったく別世界の出身であることを常に暗示するものです。
学者のマリリン・スローンは1989年の論文で、この映画には1950年代の女性に対する矛盾に満ちたプレッシャーが反映されていると指摘しました。女性は男性の女性遍歴に理解を示しながらも自身の純潔を守らなくてはならず、わるい男を「手なずけ」、更にその素行を 「癒す」ことも期待されていたと言います。
この期待は時代遅れで非現実的だと思いますが、映画における異なる2人がどうしようもなく惹かれ合う過程には、時代を越えた真実味があると思います。
このような現実的な人間の感情と夢のように華やかな設定を組み合わせた世界観は、ビリー・ワイルダー作品の特徴であり、私が彼の作品に惹かれる大きな理由の一つです。
結論
これら3本の古典映画は、素晴らしい演技と美しい音楽に彩られ、別世界を味わえる作品です。一度だけでなく、何度観ても楽しめる、まさに名作と言えます。
