Hello, this is Nisreen! Welcome to the second episode of Season Two of my podcast! It’s lovely to speak to you again!

Today, I’d love to talk about a beautiful Indian comedy Laapataa Ladies. This Hindi-language film was released in 2023, directed and produced by Kiran Rao. The co-producer is the famous actor Aamir Khan, known for iconic films like Three Idiots and Like Stars on Earth. The story is set in a fictional Indian state in 2001, where two brides are accidentally separated from their husbands on a train, sending their lives in unexpected directions.

The film won Best Film at the Indian Film Festival of Australia. and was selected as India’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.

I have to say, I loved this heartwarming film! Funnily enough, I first heard about it through my mother in Japan. She told me it was screening in Tokyo under the title 花嫁はどこへ? or "Where Are the Brides?" It’s exciting to see more Indian films reaching Japan after the huge success of RRR, another personal favourite. However, unlike RRR or KGF, which are more entertainment-focused, Laapataa Ladies carries a strong social message about female empowerment.

Aamir Khan even stated that one of the film’s goals was to make a positive change in society. Films with social commentary can sometimes feel preachy, even heavy-handed, as we saw with Barbie. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Barbie, but I have to admit that some scenes felt more like a Ted Talk rather than a story. Laapataa Ladies manages to be both impactful and entertaining whole time!

So, what makes it work? I’ll break it down into three key factors. Don’t worry—there are no spoilers ahead!

1: Perfect Casting

The actors in this film are perfect for their roles. In an interview, director Kiran Rao mentioned that Aamir Khan initially offered to play the police officer in the movie, but after discussions, they decided to cast Ravi Kishan instead. Aamir ended up not even having  a cameo, which shows how they prioritized the film's quality over star power – because Ravi Kishan’s portrayal of the obnoxious officer was spot-on!

This decision reminded me of Yeh Ballet, another Indian film I reviewed in my blog, which didn’t rely on star actors but focused on the storytelling. Nitanshi Goel, who plays the lead role of Phool in Laapataa Ladies, and Sparsh Shrivastava as her groom, also did a phenomenal job. His expressive eyes conveyed pure affection, which made their young love story so convincing. Other characters, like Chhaya Kadam as Manju Mai, were equally compelling. Her tough-but-loving demeanor reminded me of Marilla from Anne of Green Gables and grannies from Ghibli films such as Castle in the Sky. There’s something so endearing about characters like these—you can’t help but root for them.

2: Music and Cinematography

The film’s soundtrack is as varied as the scenes—some songs are playful, while others are calming. Each piece of music perfectly matches the emotions of the moment. The cinematography is equally stunning, using clever techniques like veils to represent women's limited freedom and the fear they live with. Despite its simple rural setting, the film is visually captivating, proving you don’t need elaborate sets or CGI to make a beautiful movie. The peaceful beauty of the village will stay in your heart forever.

3: Humour

One of the film’s most impressive aspects is its humour. Despite the difficult situations the characters face, there are countless moments that will make you chuckle. Humour is such a powerful way to connect with an audience, but it’s tricky to get right, especially in film. The character of Chotu, the orphan boy played by Satendra Soni, is a perfect example. His ability to see beyond the surface reminded me of characters like Oliver Twist, Matilda, or Momo from classic children’s books.

Overall, Laapataa Ladies is a film that deserves to be called a modern classic. It is also perfect for family viewing, and I can’t recommend it enough.

What did you think of today’s episode? If you enjoyed it, feel free to share your thoughts on social media or through the contact form in the description. I’d also love it if you could leave a review. Thank you so much for listening, and I’ll see you next week!

Laapataa Ladies』

[Bilingual post] Podcast S2: Episode 1 Do Japanese People Really Cheat?

     Japanese follows English/

Hello, this is Nisreen! Welcome to the first episode of Season Two of my podcast! I’m so happy to be back. How have you all been?

Today’s topic is: “Do Japanese People Really Cheat?” I know it sounds a bit like clickbait, but I assure you, I’m serious. And yes, it is related to art. For those who don’t know, I’m Japanese, and currently living in the U.S. The other day, I stumbled across a video by a Japanese YouTuber who seemed really concerned about a stereotype circulating online: that Japanese people, particularly women, are untrustworthy, and more prone to infidelity.

To be honest, this stereotype isn’t new to me. When I lived in Tokyo, I’d often hear similar comments among expats. At the time, I brushed it off, but after seeing the YouTuber’s video, and a little casual Googling of “Japanese cheating,” I realized just how widespread this perception has become. There are tons of articles and street interview videos aimed at non-Japanese audiences, discussing how cheating is supposedly normalized in Japanese society.

That got me thinking: Is there any evidence that Japanese people are more likely to cheat?

Well, the short answer is no. A study from 2020 found that 20% of married people in Japan admitted to cheating on a partner. Considered by gender, 40% of married men and less than 20% of married women admitted to affairs. In another poll, around 28% of men in general and about 22% of women said they’d cheated. For comparison, studies by Pew Research and the Institute for Family Studies found that 19% of British people and about 16% of Americans admitted to cheating on a spouse. So statistically, Japan’s infidelity rate isn’t particularly high.

This aligns with my own experience growing up in Japan. I remember multiple celebrities and politicians being publicly shamed and blacklisted after being caught cheating, especially if the cheater was a woman. Infidelity in modern Japanese society doesn’t seem "normalized" to me at all.

However, things get a little more complex when we dive deeper into the statistics. According to Pew Research, about 60% of Japanese respondents said that cheating is morally unacceptable. This is similar to places like Germany, Italy, and Spain. However, compared to the U.S, where 84% of people classified affairs as morally wrong, Japan’s number isn’t quite as high. GaijinPot author Whitney Hubbell, in one of her articles, points out that there’s a unique cultural expectation towards marriage in Japan that might also play into this perception.

Quote:“To many in Japan, marriage is still a social contract, and people are expected to marry by their early thirties. Additionally, many people in Japan tend to stay married, whether or not their partner cheats. Though hard to measure, Japan’s divorce rate is slightly lower than many Western countries and its neighbour China. One crucial element of Japanese culture is the desire to maintain peace, which has resulted in gaman culture, referring to the Japanese word for “endurance.” This general sentiment is behind many of Japan’s issues, such as people dealing with long overtime hours. It can also explain why people tend to stay in their marriages, even if a partner cheats or the marriage becomes sexless.” Unquote.

This analysis rings true to me. Although infidelity is considered unethical in Japan, there's also a deep sense of pessimism about marriage embedded in the culture. It reminded me of two beautiful contemporary manga that perfectly capture this societal pressure from a Japanese woman’s perspective. For those of you interested in a deeper social commentary beyond the stereotype of “Japanese women are cheaters,” I’d recommend reading these two works.

The first is 1122: For a Happy Marriage by Peco Watanabe. Serialized in Monthly Morning Two from 2016 to 2020, the art style is simple, but beautifully conveys the inner drama beneath the calm surface of Tokyo life. The story follows Ichiko and Otoya, a married couple who are best friends but whose sexual and romantic connection is quietly dying. Otoya, fully in love with his mistress Mizuki, no longer sleeps with Ichiko. While Ichiko initially acquiesces of Otoya’s affairs, she eventually begins to feel neglected. When she confronts him, Otoya reminds her that she was the one who, having rejected his advances, coldly suggested that he seek out sex service providers or lovers to satisfy his needs. Though Ichiko doesn’t even remember saying this, it had deeply wounded Otoya, eroding their relationship over time.

While Ichiko's words seem cruel and insensitive, I can easily imagine why some women might say something similar. Her statement reflects two toxic ideas passed down through generations: a) men aren’t supposed to be emotional or romantic, and b) marriage should be about responsibilities, not love. This manga is about both men and women struggling with such generational trauma and genuine emotional needs. I was particularly impressed by how Ichiko’s inner voice is depicted as a "little Ichiko"—a great example of manga excelling at representing complex emotions.

The second manga is Shijukara by Eri Sakai, serialized in JOUR from 2018 to 2023. The heroine, Shinobu, is a 40-year-old manga artist quietly grappling with low self-esteem. Her husband, Yohei, has been abusive, and even cheated on her when their son was a baby. Their marriage is a traditional so-called “marriage of endurance.” Sadly, the way Yohei constantly belittles her by calling her “obasan” (old woman) may resonate with many women in Japan.

With its soft, delicate art style, the story follows Shinobu’s journey of healing and rebuilding her self-esteem and career as an artist. Along the way, she witnesses and helps with others' healing processes. The romantic and sexual elements of the story are just one part of her larger spiritual journey. I particularly appreciated how the author emphasized compassion and integrity through Shinobu’s character. The manga also touches on male victims of sexual abuse, who are even more marginalized in a society governed by toxic gender norms.

Although these works are fictional and contain some fantastical elements, they offer a realistic observation of Japanese society and its social issues. I’ll link to related resources in the blog post accompanying this episode, so please check out these beautiful pieces and let me know what you think.

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 21-I Completed My Undergraduate Certificate in Fundamental Psychology! /

    Japanese follows English/

Hi all, this is Nisreen. How are you?

I have great news—I finally completed my undergraduate certificate in Fundamental Psychology! I began taking this online university course a year and a half ago.

My initial motivation was to fulfill the prerequisite requirements to potentially study art therapy in the future. Since I already had a bachelor's degree in graphic design from a university in Tokyo, I needed to obtain a degree in psychology as well.

I didn’t expect to enjoy learning so much about American society from a psychological perspective. It was fascinating to explore the deeper layers of both the challenges and hopes within this inspiring country.

This journey also helped me improve my English proficiency. Since all my previous academic education was in Japan, composing academic essays in English was a new challenge for me. I can't thank my husband, and our fur babies enough for supporting and believing in me throughout this process!

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 20- Dance Community Rocks‼ /

   Japanese follows English/

Hi all, this is Nisreen. How are you? I can't believe it's already October!

In September, Troupe Oasis, the dance troupe I’m a part of, took on the exciting challenge of hosting our first all-day event, sponsored by the Indiana Belly Dance Collective (INBC).

The whole experience reminded me of how thankful I am for our dance community’s warmth. It wasn’t just about learning new techniques—it was truly about spending time together and sharing our love for dance!

In the videos below, you can check out an interview with our director, Deborah, in which she shares her thoughts on the event.

We kicked off the day with a variety of dance workshops (I had the opportunity to teach two of them!), enjoyed a lively drum circle, and even watched a movie starring the iconic Egyptian actress Samia Gamal f. And of course, we had a delicious potluck lunch!

The day concluded with a gala show featuring incredible performers, including the fantastic band Indy Raqs, with talent from across the states.

As the PR person for the show, I couldn’t be prouder of how well it went. The last few months have been filled with non-stop posts and updates about the event—which left me feeling the way I’ve depicted in the attached image! It feels like all of our hard work, from the volunteers, INBC, and our amazing director Deborah, really paid off! 😄

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 19-We went to Sophie Ellis-Bextor Concert!'

   Japanese follows English/

 Hi all! This is Nisreen.

The other day, I had the pleasure of attending a concert by British pop musician Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and it was my first time seeing her live!

Sophie is best known for her disco-inspired music and performances, especially her "Kitchen Disco" live streams during the COVID-19 lockdown, which brought joy to so many. Ive always enjoyed her music, as well as her podcast, where she interviews 'busy working women who happen to be mothers.'

Like A Prayer - Sophie Ellis-Bextor (Live on Instagram)

She was even better live than I expected! What stood out most was her natural, down-to-earth stage presence. It was refreshing to see someone so charismatic completely own the stage, while still coming across as a fun, loving, and relatable person. The audience adored her, and the way everyone danced together felt so wholesome, unlike the intense or fanatical crowds Ive seen elsewhere.

It also made me realise that the soft, yet strong, leadership she displayed on stage is something Id love to bring to my own performances. Even though I dance belly dance on a MUCH smaller scale, her style of connecting with the audience is something I truly admire and aspire to.

As soon as I went back to my hotel room, I did this quick sketch of her.

[Bilingual post] My Dance Journey

     Japanese follows English/

To be honest, there have been times when I questioned whether performing is really worth all the time, energy, and financial investment. It might have been a 'big city' thing -- in a place like Tokyo, it often feels like you're expected to have a cut-throat attitude, and compete constantly, which doesn't feel rewarding to me. But now that I’ve relocated to a smaller town in the States, I’ve rediscovered what performing arts, or any art form, truly means to me: it’s a universal language that lets you connect with people anywhere in the world. I’m so glad I didn’t stop exploring this art form, and that my journey continues.
