Today, I want to talk about an amazing drama that just premiered on Amazon Prime: Waack Girls! written and directed by Sooni Taraporevala – who you may know from the fantastic Yeh Ballet, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I saw the trailer. Naturally, I binge-watched the series as soon as it dropped, and I have to say, it’s utterly magnetic.

Without giving away any spoilers, I’ll share four key reasons why this series captivated me—and why you should give it a watch.

Hello, this is Nisreen! Welcome to the seventh episode of Season Two of my podcast—it’s lovely to speak with you again.

Today, I want to talk about an amazing drama that just premiered on Amazon Prime: Waack Girls!, written and directed by Sooni Taraporevala – who you may know from the fantastic Yeh Ballet, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I saw the trailer. Naturally, I binge-watched the series as soon as it dropped, and I have to say, it’s utterly magnetic.

The story centres on six young women in Kolkata who form a dance group. As a dancer myself, albeit in a different genre, I was deeply moved by how authentically the series portrays the world of dance. Without giving away any spoilers, I’ll share four key reasons why this series captivated me—and why you should give it a watch.

1: A Heroine Who’s the Real Deal

Let me start with Mekhola Bose—the leading actress, and an actual professional Waack dancer. She’s been performing internationally for over a decade and previously appeared in Yeh Ballet. While she had a supporting role in that film, in Waack Girls, she absolutely shines as Ishani, the heroine.

Casting a trained dancer like Mekhola, rather than an actor who can dance, adds a level of credibility to the character. Her stage presence is magnetic—she rules the dance floor with power and grace-- but it’s her moments of vulnerability and her infectious smile that truly steal the show.

Her chemistry with Achintya Bose, who plays her best friend, and is also a fantastic dancer, makes their scenes together unforgettable. It’s also a treat to see Achintya again, having seen him previously starring in Yeh Ballet as well!

2: Respect for LGBTQ+ History

What sets Waack Girls apart is its genuine respect for the roots of Waacking. There are multiple scenes where Ishani explains how this dance style originated in the 1970s as a form of self-expression and rebellion by LGBTQ+ communities in the U.S.

This history is woven seamlessly into the story, especially through the character of Lopa, played brilliantly by Rytasha Rathore. Lopa is an openly gay, masculine-presenting woman who faces daily prejudice and challenges, yet remains unapologetically herself. Her resilience mirrors the essence of Waacking as a dance of empowerment.

While some might argue that her portrayal leans on stereotypes, I found Lopa to be realistic and relatable—her humanity shines through every scene. Ishani’s journey also resonates with the themes of Waacking, as she uses dance to claim her place in the world.

3: The Realities of an Artist’s Journey

Art isn’t always appreciated, and Waack Girls portrays this truth with refreshing honesty. In the series, the girls encounter audiences outside the Waack community who fail to connect with their performances, no matter how talented they are.

This nuanced depiction of an artist’s journey distinguishes Waack Girls from many dance films, which often equate audience applause with technical skill solely. In reality, for art to resonate, audiences often need a certain level of familiarity or cultural understanding of what they’re watching.

The characters’ struggles to capture a broader audience’s attention bring a realistic dimension to this otherwise dreamy and inspirational story. It’s a subtle, but powerful, reminder that art is as much about connection as it is about expression.

4: Genuine Friendships

At its core, Waack Girls celebrates the power of friendships—especially among women. It was particularly touching to see how Ishani helps a young gymnast to recover her self-esteem and express herself through  Waacking. The diversity among the female characters feels natural and unforced, which isn’t always the case in similar stories.

For instance, while the Tamil film Bigil emphasized women’s empowerment, its characters sometimes felt tokenistic. In contrast, the women in Waack Girls feel like real people navigating the challenges of everyday life.

The series also shows that genuine friendships aren’t limited to women. Ishani’s close bond with her quirky grandfather and her platonic friendship with her best friend are heartwarming highlights.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Waack Girls is a heartfelt celebration of dancers, women, and anyone else who dares to express themselves fully in a world that often stifles creativity. The love and appreciation for the art of dance shine through every scene, and I can’t wait for the next season!

So, what did you think of today’s episode? If you enjoyed it, I’d love to hear your thoughts—feel free to share them on social media or through the contact form in the description. And if you have a moment, leaving a review would mean the world to me!

Thank you so much for listening, and I’ll see you next time!

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 19-We went to Sophie Ellis-Bextor Concert!'

   Japanese follows English/

 Hi all! This is Nisreen.

The other day, I had the pleasure of attending a concert by British pop musician Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and it was my first time seeing her live!

Sophie is best known for her disco-inspired music and performances, especially her "Kitchen Disco" live streams during the COVID-19 lockdown, which brought joy to so many. Ive always enjoyed her music, as well as her podcast, where she interviews 'busy working women who happen to be mothers.'

Like A Prayer - Sophie Ellis-Bextor (Live on Instagram)

She was even better live than I expected! What stood out most was her natural, down-to-earth stage presence. It was refreshing to see someone so charismatic completely own the stage, while still coming across as a fun, loving, and relatable person. The audience adored her, and the way everyone danced together felt so wholesome, unlike the intense or fanatical crowds Ive seen elsewhere.

It also made me realise that the soft, yet strong, leadership she displayed on stage is something Id love to bring to my own performances. Even though I dance belly dance on a MUCH smaller scale, her style of connecting with the audience is something I truly admire and aspire to.

As soon as I went back to my hotel room, I did this quick sketch of her.

[Bilingual post] Visual Diary 10 -Manipuri Dance Online Lesson -/

Hi all, this is Nisreen. How’re you doing at this special time of year, when the air is filled with music and the smell of holiday baking?

Today, I'd like to talk about a new dance form I started learning half-a-year ago.

Manipuri Dance, also referred to as the Manipuri Raas Leela, is one of the major Indian classical dance forms, originating from the north-east state of Manipur, India.

I fell in love with the  graceful movement of the style and started taking online lessons with an India-based teacher, Ms. Tanisha Singha. You can see one of the videos where she performed.

Their hand movements look ethereal, don't they? And the costumes are adorable, like dolls! The costumes have a strong South-East Asian feel, probably because the state of Manipur, where this dance originated, is close to the border with Myanmar.

However, it is very difficult to reproduce the supple movements it requires. I am ready to be patient and spend long time to improve.

I have been learning belly dance / oriental dance since I was a teenager, performing and teaching which I'll keep doing, but this is probably the first time I have studied any other kind of dance for more than half-a-year. I am still a beginner, but I really enjoy the practice, thanks in part to the kindness and patience of my teacher!

The drawing below is about me trying to learn the dance with her, with a little audience at home.

[Bilingual Post] South Indian Dance Show Report

 Hi to all!

This is Nisreen from Tokyo.

On 1st October, I had a privilege of watching the fantastic South Indian Dance (Mohiniyattam) show, produced by Hiromi Maruhashi, who is one of the most prestigious dancers of the style in Japan. This was my first time to see a Mohiniyattam performance in real life!

The dances were choreographed based on Hindu stories, and complemented by the glass art collection from the Fukuoka Asia Museum. Yes, it was a collaboration of visual arts and performing arts, which was totally my kind of thing!

It was impressive on so many levels. I listed the 5 points below that I was particularly amazed by.

1. Hiromi Maruhashi was not only a main dancer, but also the MC. The show was framed by her story telling before each dance performance. It helped the performances resonate with me, especially because she was humorous and fun to listen to. I also have to add that she was not out of breath at all when she danced, and came back gracefully to the MC role! I don't even know how that’s possible.

2. All dancers were well trained and professional

There were only four troupe members apart Maruhashi on stage, and I was convinced that they must've been excellent students who were chosen especially for this occasion. I enjoyed that each of them showed their personality on stage, which suited their characters very well. Even in the end of the show when they were introduced, they looked very professional in their "dancer" posture!

3. The dancers acted, not only danced

As mentioned earlier, the dances were designed to tell stories. Hiromi Maruhashi was in particular incredibly expressive. Sometimes she appeared as a courageous god, in other times as a coquettish witch (which with was my favourite) Even though the dancers did not change their costumes, it was easy to tell which character they were playing. (For an Oriental dancer/Belly dancer like me, it was refreshing to see a great show that didn't require costume change for each song!)

4.The art collection was unique and enjoyable

Sometimes I wished there were more time to contemplate the art projected on the background. The harmony of the art and their gorgeous costumes was a treat for eyes.

5. The translation of the stories was excellent

There was translation of the lyrics from the songs on the display through the whole show.  I thought it was a great idea for conveying the meaning of the dances. The translation was not monotonous, but was natural and easy to empathize with.

Overall, it was a conscientiously crafted show based on cultural understanding and fine techniques.

Thank you Hiromi-san and the troupe members for sharing art with the audience!

King Of Pop

Smooth Criminal 1988/ Michael Jackson

"Girl Hunt Ballet" — Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse, 1953

Dangerous Live 1995 / Michael Jackson

Get Happy 1950 / Judy Garland

THE JACKSONS & N'SYNC - DANCING MACHINE ( LIVE 2001 )

I Got You /JAMES BROWN 1965

Manuela Carrasco
